Returning Prints from the gallery show

Sorry for the delay in getting this all together here, the show came down right after we returned from SGC and we’ve been running around with our heads off getting back into it in Boulder. So below is a link to a Paypal donation option which we are using for the costs of return shipping. The reason it is a donation button is because the cost of shipping is a little different per person, but if there is any money left over it will be sent back with the prints. We’re hoping to have everything shipped this weekend or whenever the shipping fees come in. Thank you all so much!

And thank you all again from all of us! We hope to continue this exhibition, but with more time and planning next year, and hope you can all be apart!

Thank you all so so so much for your support with this project! We had an absolutely incredible time at Southern Graphics! Dozens of printmaking lectures, demos, and panels; more gallery shows (which, a couple People of Print members were involved with) and events then you could imagine; and absolutely amazing people! I think its fair to say that what our group experienced at SGC was so much more than we expected and really brought us head first into the printmaking world!

It’s been far to long since we’ve posted on our blog so we need to get caught up! Between the show, preparing for SGC, and school we’ve all been extremely busy but it has worked out wonderfully! The show was a huge success in helping to send us off to the Southern Graphics Council Conference, which we’ll be taking off for on Tuesday! The Art Work is in!

So we’ve received work from over 20 incredible artists and have a beautiful body of work to show! We’re busy now organizing and preparing everything for the opening this Friday. We can not thank everyone enough for participating and supporting us in our efforts – And a special Thank You to Stu and Nicky Alden from the Ink Lounge Gallery for being so incredibly supportive!

We’re looking forward to having a great opening at the gallery, and if you come be sure to check out the variety of shirts we’ve made as well!

Hopefully everyone had a wonderful holiday break and isn’t to reluctant to get back into the thick of it again. The heat is on and the Southern Graphics Conference is coming up quick! So, we would like to meet with everyone on Wednesday at 7pm in the Printmaking studio to discuss assigned jobs and such. Specifically getting the cards and t-shirts going all while holding the show with the Ink Lounge Gallery. Can’t wait to see you all again!

Maren’s New York Trip

Hi you guys

Gabe asked me to talk a little bit about my trip to NYC to look at grad schools. Needless to say, I had a great time, and it was really helpful to be able to visit. Because of my visit I have actually ruled out one of the schools that I was going to apply to.

I visited Columbia, School of Visual Arts, and Pratt Institute. By far and away Pratt was my favorite, which is funny because I thought it was going to be my least favorite. I loved Pratt because it is located in Brooklyn, and I LOVED the neighborhood (more than Manhattan even), and the school feels small and intimate even though it is fairly large with a fairly large graduate program. They have a little gated campus which is actually really nice in the middle of the city. The print shop was really cool (in the basement naturally) but it was large, spanning several rooms with all the usual stuff plus screen printing. I was actually really impressed with the campus. I could go on and on, but I guess I’ll stop on that note.

I really liked Columbia (obviously) and I think their program sounds amazing. They are definitely more critical theory centered versus Pratt and School of Visual Arts which are more studio based where making work takes precedence. Columbia is about working with the community, you have mentors (working artists), you are TAing or doing an assistantship, and finally, after all that, you are working in your studio. They emphasize the fact that they are not a “finishing school” where you go to just sit in your studio and make work. Both Pratt and SVA are not necessarily “finishing schools” but they do place a heavy emphasis on studio practice. Also, both of these schools do NOT do assistantships or force you to TA. That kind of bummed me out, but they are really concerned about practicing artists teaching the courses, which is also a good thing. There are a lot of factors to consider because every school is a little different.

SVA was my least favorite because the program seemed studio based to the extreme. It seemed very solitary. The campus consists of one building in the middle of Chelsea. I did not really like that. All the graduate studios are on the 8th and 9th floors and the workshops are located in the same building. They do have a really diverse group of grad students, but on the whole the program is very hands off and it seems like it just gives students unlimited free time to make work with some direction from professors but A LOT of uninterrupted studio time. SVA also does not do any sort of assistantships/teaching because they want professional working artists to be the teachers. Again, good and bad. They have Marilyn Minter teaching there which I thought was amazing because I love her, but I do not think this program is right for me. They emphasized over and over again how hands off the program is – you are essentially free to do whatever you want.

Going for Southern Graphics

Hello everyone, so the meeting the other night went pretty well and everything is coming together to prepare for SGC. We really need to get going on fundraising though especially with this semester being almost over and then a month in between for holidays. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday December 3rd at 8pm after Thanksgiving break is over. We’re asking that everyone make a holiday card in an edition of at least 10 and start preparing a design to print onto a shirt for the next meeting so we can really start the fundraising process. Lara is going to look into selling the cards at the UMC gallery and we’ll see about having a booth in the UMC as well. If anyone has any other ideas for where to sell the cards please comment and let us know! We’ve also been discussing the possibility of having a show of our work/curating an open show. I spoke with Melanie about the possibility of hosting a juried exhibition with her as a guest judge and she was very excited about the idea. The Ink Lounge Gallery in Denver was also interested in working with us and have some great workshops and things going on down there. Our big step here is going to be getting the funding so we need everyone who wants to make the trip really help us getting these things moving – cards, shirts, and we’ll start putting together some proposals and speak with SOFO (Student Organizations Finance Office).

If you are serious about making the trip to Chicago this spring (March 25th to the 29th – which is also spring break) please come to the meeting on Dec. 3rd at 8pm and try to prepare the Holiday card series and start working on prep for shirts. Please leave any questions or comments or email us!

CUSAS show

CU Student Artists’ Society is hosting an open call, everything hangs show in Painting room 177 in Fleming. The work will be displayed salon-style on the wall and I do believe there will be food and possibly a DJ. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow students and to see their work/ show your. CUSAS is looking for lots of entries, so SUBMIT! Email studentartistssociety@gmail.com the names and sizes of the pieces you are submitting and drop them off in 177 in the empty office next to Franciose’s or bring the work to the Painting room before 12 on Saturday.

This is an exceptionally easy way to get some experience showing your art, it will be fun, there is free food, and you don’t have to buy any frames!
